New Feature: Automatic RSS Feed Submission

Development on the latest PlugIM feature is complete. Now you can attach an RSS feed to your user account and every item that comes through the feed will automatically be submitted as an upcoming story on PlugIM. All you need to do is login to your account (or if you don’t have an account yet, register) and go to your profile settings. There you’ll see a new section of settings for the RSS feed.

First and most importantly is the URL, make sure to include the full address to your feed. Then select the category that best describes your feed. It doesn’t need to be a perfect fit for every post, you can always individually edit posts on PlugIM after they’ve been submitted if need be. Then select how often you want your feed to be checked for new items. There are values to choose from ranging from 15 minutes up to 24 hours. Just keep in mind if you set this to 15 minutes, your feed is going to be accessed 96 times a day, however if that doesn’t bother you, that’s the best way to get your submissions posted to PlugIM as soon as they arrive on your feed. Finally you can also add tags to your feed. The tags will be applied to every PlugIM submission off your feed. Again, they don’t need to be perfect but can better narrow down the scope of your category.

The rules for adding an RSS feed to your PlugIM account are:

  1. You are the owner of the feed
  2. Internet marketing feeds only! Sure you can post off topic occasionally, but the overwhelming theme of your feed needs to be related to internet marketing in some way. SEO, SEM, blogging for dollars, Adwords, traffic generation, link baiting etc.

*Please note: feeds need to be activated by an administrator. This is to avoid getting bombarded with off topic spam. Most feeds will be approved or denied within 24 hours so please keep this in mind when activating this feature. Changing your feed URL will reset the approval process. To deactivate automatic feed submission, simply delete the URL.

It will be interesting to see how you handle Feedburner feeds for the URL so I have added mine.

It would be good if you could collect tags from the posts themselves, although I am not sure how much data you currently allow in your database for tags. I know I have had problems adding tags for manual submissions because the data field is so small. I use lots of tagging.

Andy, it’s a work in progress. This is just phase one but for right now the URL on posts from feedburner feeds will show up as feedburner.com but soon I hope to change that to reflect the actual URL of the post.

As far as the tagging goes, I’m glad you said something because I didn’t realize the field length for tags was so restricted. It’s been adjusted and you should be able to use many more tags now. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Very nice feature man! This will take a lot of extra steps off the plates of your die hard users, like me.

Doess it will be next feature for spammer..?

#6: Dravis Says: February 15th, 2007 at 2:32 pm

Pogung177, the RSS feeds need to have administrative approval before the auto-submission starts. I’ve already turned down a couple of feeds that aren’t related to internet marketing.

Also if an item comes through a feed that’s off topic, you can still report it as spam and it’ll be queued for deletion.

If an approved feed turns into a spammy feed, it’ll be disabled. Don’t worry, this feature will be policed very carefully.

Seems like a nice feature, however, I’d personally prefer an option to set the stores in a queue or something at my account page so I can decide what to post and what not - I post a lot internet marketing/SEO related, but about half the posts isn’t directly related to it, which would only make the website a bit filthy.

I used the auto-submission feature for a couple of weeks with success, but I updated my feed URL (for better categorization, i.e., fewer off-topic postings), and it has been quite a while (almost a week) and it hasn’t been re-activated.

Is there anything that can be done about this? Some way for us to check your queue of RSS feeds awaiting review, perhaps?

Great feature, btw. I think this already has done a lot to improve the amount of submitted content.

Johnny wow I’m really sorry about that. This is something I need to work on. Right now the way the mod is written, if you change an RSS feed address that’s already been approved, the system unapproves it so an admin can check the new feed address which is good. The problem is, I haven’t added any code to notify the admins to check the feeds that have been modified so it’s a manual process to go browsing through all the unapproved feeds from time to time which, as you can probably imagine, is quite a process. I’m going to be working on the site this afternoon actually so I’ll put priority on getting some kind of notification in place for this. In the mean time, I’m going to re-enable your feed right now. Thanks.

#11: Dravis Says: March 19th, 2007 at 9:46 am

OK development for admin notifications is complete. You guys won’t notice any difference but from now on whenever a new feed is created or a current feed has it’s URL changed, an email notification goes out to the admin group. This should speed up the process of getting your RSS feeds approved, especially if/when you change the URL.

I just set this up with a feed from pips.yahoo - which agregrates our feed - is that ok? how long till we get them approved?

#15: Dravis Says: April 28th, 2007 at 10:54 pm

Hi Matt, I approved your feed but this was the first Yahoo Pipes feed we’ve seen so I wasn’t sure if it would work or not. I checked the logs after the first couple updates and unfortunately the feed reader we use doesn’t seem to be able to handle the feed from Yahoo Pipes. I’ve put it on the “to do list” but I don’t know how soon I’ll be able to get at this. If you have any other feeds, feel free to update your account and we’ll get that one going. Sorry about that.

#16: Matt Ellsworth Says: April 29th, 2007 at 10:37 am

Not a problem - i’ll run the pipe thru a feedburner feed and then submit it - normally that will work. I’ll update it now.

#18: Scott Hendison Says: July 1st, 2007 at 7:53 pm

I just added that plugin to my blog, but see that my feeds have not been approved yet for auto submission, so I took it off, to avoid a bunch of zeros showing up today.

I assume approval will happen on Monday. Thanks for the cool feature, and PlugIM overall!

#19: Dravis Says: July 1st, 2007 at 8:09 pm

Hi Scott, actually I just approved your feed moments ago. The feed reader only grabs the most recent item on your feed though. So from this point on, every time it finds a new post on your feed, it’ll be submitted, but older posts will still need to be submitted manually. Otherwise every time a new feed is approved, we’d suddenly have 10-20 new submissions from the new site in a row which would quickly bury other stories in the queue. We figured this was the fairest way to handle it. Feel free to submit any of your older posts though.

The PlugIM has become an indispensable and integral part of my blog. Thanks alot!

#21: bala Says: July 22nd, 2007 at 1:59 pm

i think plugim is one of the 3 social sites that offers Automatic RSS feed submission feature. there are other services like twitterfeed (review at http://www.themesearchengine.com/twitterfeed ) who pings the blog RSS feed and fetches the title & description to post in social site. would like to see more integration from plugim - maybe myspace & facebook application integration next ??

~BALA
future is themesearchengine.com !

Hey Dravis, is this feature of PlugIM still active? I added my RSS feed a couple of days ago, but nothing is happening.

My username is amwithryan.

Thanks!
