Writing is by its very nature a pursuit of tangible solitude with the writer often holed up in solitary for months on end with nobody but their make-believe personalities to break silence (which perhaps explains why so many writers lean towards the eccentric). So it comes with little surprise that writers detest the idea of surrendering directorial control of their writing projects to an agent/publisher whose only interest is the profit bottom line. With the endless do-it-yourself possibilities that the internet offers artists, that has all changed!
