The GPhone should give Google extra leverage against carriers that have so far refused to open up their networks. Google will preload services such as interactive maps, email and its search engine onto the phone.
The Apple iPhone has already had an impact on how the mobile Web is evolving. If the Google Gphone is a voice-controlled mobile device, the impact on the mobile Web will be even more dramatic. Perhaps this is what can be read between the lines of the opening keynote speech at SpeechTEK 2007 given by Mike Cohen, Google’s speech technology manager.
What is being described is a Linux-based phone that may have WiFi and is tied to Sprint. Just as the Apple iPhone is tied to AT&T.
Google is set to develop its own mobile telephone and wireless Internet device to rival that of Apple’s iPhone. The technology community`s nickname for the Google project is called gPhone. However it is not creating the telephone for sale, but they are hoping to persuade wireless communication systems and cellular telephone makers to use their own software in this device.
