Things to Remember While Shipping Killifish Safely

Killifish is a very popular type of fish and many fiskeepers breed it for making money. However if you are a beginner in Killifish breeding you should remember certain precautions about shipping the fish.

You should not ship a Killifish which is looking sick. Usually it is going to die during the travel. Once it dies it will start contaminating the water and the other fish will get suffocated and die. In the same way never ship a Killifish which is under stress. If there are unexpected changes in the temperature wide fluctuations in the quality of water or if there is a change in the oxygen levels the fish is likely to get stressed.

While shipping Killifish you should make them starve. Apparently this may seem to be a cruel idea but it will save their life. If the fish has eaten well before shipping it will secrete toxics like ammonia in feces. That will contaminate the water and if the time for the journey is long it will suffocate the fish. You should not offer them in the food for at least 48 hours before you ship them. They can easily survive for this much time in fact they can easily survive for another 48 hours.

Usually Killifish will eat the algae in the aquarium. So it is advisable to shift the fish to another tank without any plants for a couple of days. You can use the water from the old aquarium for shipping purposes because the fish will be comfortable with that water.

While shipping the fish in a bag you should leave sufficient space for the air inside the bag. Usually people tend to fill the bag fully. In fact a lot of air is required for the existence of the fish during shipping. This air of will be useful for getting new oxygen. If you are intending to use a plastic bag of about 22 x 4 then a water level of 1 will be sufficient for the fish to survive for about 48 hours. The fish does not require much water but only a reasonable quantity is sufficient.

There are breather bags available in the market. If you use them you can fill the whole bag with water. They had is a facility of gas diffusion which can supply air for their survival. If the mode of transportation is by air you should remember very important thing such bag should not be filled entirely with water and there should be some air left because the pressure inside the aircraft may bust the bag.

You should cover the original bad with another one in order to prevent the leakages.

You should not fill up the bag with pure oxygen. Instead you should allow normal air insight. The oxygen will create imbalances in the process of gas exchange and there is a risk of suffocation.

Do not forget to add a dechloraminator in the shipping bag.

Some people think that if they put some live plants in the bag it will be a good idea for the survival of the fish. They think that the plants will produce oxygen and will absorb carbon dioxide. However they forget an important thing about the process such activity can take place only in the sunlight. As your shipping your bag in a dark container the plants will not be able to produce oxygen. Instead the plants will consume oxygen and release carbon dioxide in the dark.

It is a good idea to contact the agency responsible for shipping to find out the latest rules and regulations for shipping the fish. Sometimes due to the changes in the policies of the government your shipment may face unexpected hurdles and the delay can be fatal to your fish.

If you are shipping eggs of Killifish you should use the same water from the aquarium where they were are laid and you should also add an absorber for ammonia. If the spawning is done on a spawning mop you should ship the entire mop. You should preferably use bubble wrapping for protecting the eggs.
